CENTRAL RAIL ROAD EXTENSION COMPANY OF LONG ISLAND

EAST  HINSDALE - FLORAL  PARK

NEW MAY 13, 2002 - Revised OCTOBER 16, 2004

THE 1873 BEERS ATLAS AND THE RESEARCH OF WILLIAM D. SLADE INDICATE THAT BETWEEN 1873 AND 1878 THERE WAS A  PLAINFIELD STATION  JUST EAST OF CARNATION AVENUE.       IT DOES NOT APPEAR IN 1874,   1877 OR 1878 TIMETABLES.

IN 1873 THE CENTRAL RAIL ROAD OF LONG ISLAND CROSSED THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD MAIN LINE BETWEEN QUEENS AND HYDE PARK STATIONS VIA AN OVERHEAD BRIDGE.  IN 1878 STEWART JUNCTION STATION OPENED, A CONNECTION WAS BUILT FROM THERE TO CENTRAL JUNCTION AND THE CREEDMOOR CUT-OFF WAS BUILT.
THIS TRACK ARRANGEMENT REMAINED INTO THE 1880'S AND PROVIDED A WYE FOR TURNING TRAINS.   BY SEPTEMBER, 1879 THIS STATION BECAME HINSDALE, PROBABLY WITH THE CLOSING OF THE LINE FROM FLUSHING TO CREEDMOOR AND ITS HINSDALE STATION.    IN JUNE 1885 THE STATION WAS STILL LISTED AS HINSDALE.
BY OCTOBER 1887 AND AS LATE AS OCTOBER 1889 THE NAME WAS
EAST HINSDALE WHICH BECAME FLORAL PARK BY 1890.

SEE TIME TABLES ON STEWART LINE PAGE ONE

IN OCTOBER, 1887 THE TOWER AT EAST HINSDALE OPENED ABOVE THE 1878 STATION.
TOWER NUMBER 43 HAD 24 LEVERS AND OPERATED THE CROSSING GATES AT TULIP AVENUE.

RAILROAD GAZETTE ON FEBRUARY 10, 1888 REPORTED ON THE
LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD'S FOURTEEN INTERLOCKING PLANTS.

"AT EAST HINSDALE A SET OF GATE ARMS FOR A HIGHWAY CROSSING IS WORKED FROM THE TOWER AND INTERLOCKED.  AT THIS POINT AS WELL AS AT ALL THE TOWERS LATELY CONSTRUCTED, DERAILING SWITCHES ARE USED, AND THE STATEMENT IS MADE THAT 'THEY WORK VERY EFFECTUALLY IN PREVENTING ENGINES PASSING THE HOME SIGNALS'....."

IN LATE 1889 OR 1890 EAST HINSDALE BECAME   FLORAL PARK

BETWEEN 1900 AND 1908 - A NEW TOWER IS IN THE PICTURE, POSSIBLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
(ARRT'S RECORDS SHOW CONSTRUCTION OF SECOND TOWER AS "1904" WITH A "?")
THERE IS NO SIGN OF THIRD RAIL WHICH WAS PUT IN SERVICE IN 1908.
THE CREEDMOOR TRACK HAS BEEN CUT BACK AND RECONNECTED WITH THE MAIN LINE FROM THE EAST.
