CENTRAL RAIL ROAD EXTENSION COMPANY OF LONG ISLAND |
THE CENTRAL RAIL ROAD OF LONG ISLAND WAS BUILT BY ALEXANDER T. STEWART TO PROVIDE PASSENGER SERVICE TO GARDEN CITY AND ACCESS TO THE BRICK YARD AT BETHPAGE. THE CENTRAL RAIL ROAD EXTENSION WAS BUILT TO TAP THE FIRE ISLAND TOURIST TRADE AND PROVIDE SERVICE TO BRESLAU AND BABYLON. BOTH LINES WERE OPERATED BY AND AS PART OF THE FLUSHING AND NORTH SIDE RAIL ROAD. UNDER LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD OPERATION THE LINES WERE AT FIRST OPERATED INDEPENDENTLY. AFTER CONSOLIDATION THE C.R.R.L.I. BETWEEN FLORAL PARK AND BABYLON BECAME THE CENTRAL EXTENSION. IN 1925 THE LINE BETWEEN BETHPAGE JUNCTION AND BABYLON WAS REBUILT AND RENAMED THE CENTRAL BRANCH |
