ARRT'S ARRCHIVES |
THE BROOKLYN & JAMAICA RAIL ROAD THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD and ATLANTIC AVENUE |
THE DECISION TO EXTEND THE I. R. T. TO BROOKLYN RESULTED IN PLANS BEING DRAWN UP FOR CONNECTING THE TWO RAILROADS AT FLATBUSH AVENUE TERMINAL. THE L.I.R.R.'S 1903 PLANS SHOW SIX OF THEIR TRACKS RUNNING THROUGH TO CONNECT WITH THE I.R.T.
THIS PLAN SHOWS FOUR STATION TRACKS MERGING INTO TWO CONNECTING TRACKS. THESE WERE ORIGINALLY TO BE STATION TRACKS FIVE, SIX, SEVEN AND EIGHT BUT
TRACKS ONE AND TWO WHICH WERE TO CONNECT FROM THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE STATION WERE NEVER BUILT. WHEN THE STATION OPENED THESE TRACKS WERE NUMBERS THREE, FOUR, FIVE AND SIX. ON JULY FIRST 1978 THE STATION TRACKS WERE RENUMBERED TO THEIR PRESENT DESIGNATIONS. |
BY 1907 THE I.R.T. HAD DECIDED TO BUILD FURTHER INTO BROOKLYN AND THAT THEIR ATLANTIC AVENUE STATION WOULD HAVE FOUR TRACKS. THE LONG ISLAND BEGAN ORDERING CARS THAT WERE 65 FEET LONG - MP54'S - TOO LONG TO RUN ON THE I.R.T. THE PLANNED CONNECTION WAS REDUCED TO THREE TRACKS, ONE, SEVEN (LATER 5) AND EIGHT (LATER 6). THEN TRACKS ONE AND TWO WERE DROPPED FROM THE PLANS ENTIRELY AND THE OTHER TRACKS WERE RENUMBERED. THE I.R.T. DID INSTALL A SWITCH AND UNTIL 1922 HAD A SHORT SPUR TRACK. THE CONNECTION WITH THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD MAY NEVER HAVE BEEN BUILT. FOLLOWING IS SOME EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THAT VIEW. |
AS CONSTRUCTION PROGRESSED THE AREA WHERE TRACKS ONE AND TWO WERE TO LEAVE L.I.R.R. PROPERTY AND CONNECT WITH THE I.R.T. WAS CLOSED OFF BY A TEMPORARY WOODEN RETAINING WALL. THIS PLAN SHOWS THE END OF THE NEW (IN 1905) CONCRETE TUNNEL WALL AND THE TEMPORARY TIMBER BULKHEAD FROM ABOVE - THE TRACKS ARE THE B.R.T. TROLLEY TRACKS ON THE STREET. |
BY 1916 OR SO THE WAITING ROOM PORTION OF THE CONNECTION HAD BEEN CONCRETED OVER AND TRACKS ONE (WAS THREE) THROUGH SEVEN RENUMBERED. TRACKS TEN THROUGH SIXTEEN RETAINED THEIR OLD NUMBERS RESULTING IN THERE BEING NO TRACKS EIGHT AND NINE. IN 1920 TRACK SEVEN WAS REMOVED. |
