YOUR TAX PAYER DOLLARS AT WORK IN THE LATTER PART OF 1981 THE M. T. A. HIRED A PAINTING CONTRACTOR TO PAINT THE UPPER WAITING ROOM. THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT EMPLOYS FULL TIME PAINTERS. THE UPPER WAITING ROOM WAS NOT USED, SERVING ONLY AS AN ENTRANCE FROM THE STREET TO THE TRACK LEVEL TICKET OFFICE AND WAITING ROOM. THE PAINT JOB WAS BEYOND GOOD - THE OLD PAINT WAS EVEN SCRAPED OFF THE ARCHED WINDOWS. |
BECAUSE THE STORES AND OFFICES WERE UNOCCUPIED VANDALS ENTERED AND THEIR LOOTING CAUSED WATER DAMAGE SO SEVERE THAT THE UPPER WAITING ROOM WAS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC AND WITHIN ONLY A FEW YEARS ANOTHER CONTRACTOR WAS HIRED TO RAIZE THE BEAUTIFUL BRICK 1907 STATION!
