THE BROOKLYN & JAMAICA RAIL ROAD THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD and ATLANTIC AVENUE
CARLTON AVENUE FREIGHT YARD and VANDERBILT AVENUE FREIGHT YARD
UNTIL THE CHANGES OF 1904 - 1906 BROOKLYN WAS SERVED BY THE CARLTON AVENUE FREIGHT YARD WHICH WAS SITUATED BETWEEN CARLTON AVENUE AND SIXTH AVENUE. THE FREIGHT HOUSE HAD A TELEGRAPH OFFICE WITH THE CALL LETTERS "FH".
CARLTON AVENUE YARD WAS EXTENDED EAST TO VANDERBILT AVENUE AND WEST NEARLY TO FIFTH AVENUE. AT VANDERBILT AVENUE A NEW CONNECTION WAS MADE WITH THE TRACKS IN THE TUNNEL AT "VD" INTERLOCKING. THE YARD BECAME KNOWN AS " VD YARD" OR "VANDERBILT AVENUE YARD".

AND THE ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1910
AT CARLTON AVENUE NOTE THE DOUBLE TRACK CONNECTION WITH THE ATLANTIC BRANCH MAIN TRACKS IN THE TUNNEL.
"CT" TOWER CONTROLLED THE SWITCHES AND SIGNALS.
SIGNALS ENTERING THE TUNNEL FROM THE YARD WERE INSTALLED JULY 10, 1906.
NOTE THE LONG ISLAND EXPRESS STABLE WITH TWO TRACKS ENTERING THE BUILDING,
THE NEW VANDERBILT AVENUE FREIGHT YARD. THE RAMP FROM PACIFIC STREET IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION.

JUNE 1959 - MORE REEFERS THAN IN 1915. McCAULEY POTATOES BUILDING WAS RAZED TO BUILD A GAS STATION. NOTE THAT THERE ARE FREIGHT CARS IN THE FREIGHT YARD. (FAR RIGHT)
JUNE 1959 - THE WEST YARD BECAME A LAYUP YARD FOR MU CARS. IN THE DISTANCE ARE THE ELEVATED TRACK AND UNLOADING PLATFORM FOR ARMOUR COMPANY.
SOME OF THAT ELEVATED STRUCTURE MAY HAVE DATED BACK TO 1899.
IN 1904 - 1906 THIS STRETCH OF EL REPLACED THE 1899 STRUCTURE BUILT ABOVE THE TRACKS ON ATLANTIC AVENUE. ARMOUR'S UNLOADING FACILITY IS HIGH ON THE LEFT.
