GLENDALE JUNCTION
GLENDALE JUNCTION WAS CREATED IN 1880 WHEN THE NEW YORK, WOODHAVEN & ROCKAWAY RAIL - ROAD WAS JOINED WITH THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD BY MEANS OF A DOUBLE TRACK CONNECTION.
HENRY WILHELM, LONGTIME ERA MEMBER, DREW THIS MAP FROM AN ARTICLE IN RAILWAY AGE FROM JULY, 1908.
A TWO STORY FRAME TOWER WAS CONSTRUCTED AROUND A UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL COMPANY SAXBY & FARMER INTERLOCKING MACHINE AND OPENED AUGUST 26. WHEN THE BLOCK SIGNAL SYSTEM WAS PUT IN EFFECT THIS TOWER BECAME NUMBER 10 AND WAS LATER "JD" TOWER. WHEN THESE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE TAKEN IN 1910 THE GLENDALE CUT-OFF, VISIBLE IN THE BACKGROUND, WAS BEING CONSTRUCTED TO ALLOW ELECTRIC TRAINS TO AND FROM PENN STATION TO REPLACE THE STEAM SERVICE FROM LONG ISLAND CITY TO THE ROCKAWAYS. "JD" WAS CLOSED AND TORN DOWN IN 1910. THE GRADE CROSSING IN THE FOREGROUND IS VAN DINE AVENUE.
THE 1900 AND 1908 CROSSING LISTS SHOW THE PRIVATE CROSSING OF JAMES VANDERVEER, PROTECTED BY "FARM GATES", ON THE ROCKAWAY BEACH DIVISION BETWEEN JD TOWER AND TROTTING COURSE LANE GRADE CROSSING.
THE ABOVE MAP SHOWS THE VANDERVEER PROPERTY AND TROTTING COURSE LANE AT THE RIGHT. THE CLOSE-UP BELOW SHOWS WHAT APPEAR TO BE STANDARD HIGHWAY CROSSING GATES TO THE RIGHT OF THE TOWER.
WE IMAGINE VANDERVEER HAD FARM GATES SIMILAR TO THIS
FOR CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES IN 1909 - 1910 STANDARD HIGHWAY CROSSING GATES MAY HAVE REPLACED THE FARM GATES.
