THE   BROOKLYN,   FLATBUSH   AND   CONEY   ISLAND   RAILWAY
THE   BRIGHTON   BEACH   LINE
    Part     TWO
THE   FRANKLIN   AVENUE   SHUTTLE

New DECEMBER 10, 2002 - REVISED 02/11/07

IN 1896 THE BROOKLYN AND BRIGHTON BEACH WAS EXTENDED
ACROSS ATLANTIC AVENUE AND NORTH TO A CONNECTION
WITH THE KINGS COUNTY ELEVATED RAILROAD.   IT CROSSED
THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD WITH AN OVERHEAD BRIDGE.

THIS 1896 STRUCTURE SPANNED ST. MARKS AVENUE,   BERGEN STREET,   DEAN STREET,
PACIFIC STREET,   ATLANTIC AVENUE AND LEFFERTS PLACE.   PAUL MATUS ADDS:
"Behind the cameraman is Prospect Place, which was crossed at grade.   The next street
(with the bridge, w/o the trolley) is St. Marks Avenue, ...... behind that is Bergen with trolley, and so on."

DURING THE ATLANTIC AVENUE IMPROVEMENT CONSTRUCTION OF
THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD TUNNEL THE BRIDGE WAS REINFORCED.

APPARENTLY THE MAIN SPAN WAS LENGTHENED -

AND EVENTUALLY REPLACED.

THIS 1965 PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS THE FRANKLIN AVENUE SHUTTLE CROSSING ATLANTIC AVENUE AND APPROACHING DEAN STREET STATION.   ART ASKED PAUL MATUS ABOUT THE "CONEY ISLAND" DESTINATION SIGN:

"The sign would not be right as a regular service train, however it is very possibly a diversion due to trackwork north of DeKalb or an emergency.
"The “QT” is not quite right under any circumstance, but there was no distinct signage for the Franklin Shuttle on the R27s, and the motormen often used whatever seemed best (this was before”SS”). OR it could be further indication of a Brighton Local diversion."

AUGUST  1,  1920  THE  BRIGHTON  BEACH  LINE  SUBWAY  WAS  OPENED  AND  THE  LINE  BETWEEN  FULTON  STREET  AND  PROSPECT  PARK  BECAME  THE  FRANKLIN  AVENUE  SHUTTLE.    PAUL  MATUS ADDS
"different through services were operated at various times for another four decades".

THE ATLANTIC AVENUE IMPROVEMENT PROVIDED FOR A FUTURE L.I.R.R.
CONNECTION WITH THE BRIGHTON BEACH LINE.   THE MAP SHOWS A DOUBLE
TRACK CONNECTION WHICH WAS NEVER BUILT BUT THE SPACE WAS PROVIDED IN
THE SUBWAY WALL.   THE 1916 VALUATION PLAN SHOWS THE OPENING TO THE SOUTH
CLOSED OFF BY A WOODEN RETAINING WALL.   IT IS NOW A CONCRETE-BLOCK WALL.

THE STAIRS PROVIDE AN EMERGENCY EXIT TO THE STREET.
