Paul Smith's
of the Adirondacks
Order# ADK-429
From old stories of Paul Smith's continuing quest for the perfect
Adirondack location for a "sporting house", he had resisted several locations
before discovering his dream place. |

Indian Point Cottage, Mt. View, N.Y.
Order# ADK-402
"Indian Point" was the first cottage built at Mt. View, NY in 1884.
Typical of small Adirondack camps of that era, it brought many by horse and buggy, later
by railroad, to enjoy the health-giving lakeside mountain air. A civil war
artist/photographer, Christy R. Fay, visiting his brother, took this interior scene, later
to be hand colored in acrylics by his great-niece, Ruth Jones Ryan.

Adirondack Guide, 1884
Order# ADK-315
Typical of the Adirondack guides of the mid-18th century was Adam Ansback, his
bark-roofed log cabin located at State Dam, (later "Mt. View"), on a promontory
extending into the Salmon River. This spot was, originally, an Indian gathering place.
Doubtless his Native-American and German heritage enhanced the skills that lured fisherman
and hunters from far and near, many famous men being among his clients. When the first
cottage, "Indian Point" was built on Mt. View lake in 1884, his cabin for many
years remained behind its boathouse.

|
The Old Comanche Launch
Order# ADK-430
The old "Comanche" plying the waters of Mt. View, piloted by its owner
Willard Ansback, son of the famous old Adirondack Guide, Adam Ansback. Many a boatload of
campers arriving by train were delivered to cottages surrounding both Indian
and Mt. View lake, as well as luggage and mail. |
|

Order# ADK-432

View, Duane, N.Y. area. The first Glazier's store was started by Albon in Owls Head, N.Y.,
in the late 1800's, with a seasonal store in the Mt. View area. This opened
as the campers moved into their summer cottages, closing at their departure.

Between the Birches, Mt. View, NY

Photographed from a boathouse on Mt. View Lake, sometime in the 1920's, then
painted in 1998, it shows a lovely Adirondack lake dominated by Sugarloaf Mountain. |
|
Home from Blueberrying
Order# ADK-404
One of the most anticipated outings in Northern N.Y. State years ago was the annual
summer harvest of blueberries, enjoyed by young and old, providing endless varieties of
edible treats, and often canned for later enjoyment. Families and groups triumphantly
emerged from the woodsy terrain's, where the ravages of forest fires had produced the best
crops, bearing many quarts gleaned daily. With transportation readily available by the N.Y
Central RR as it penetrated the Northeastern Adirondacks, visiting the hamlet of Mt. View
north/south each day, this shows weary pickers returning home with baskets and pails full.

|
First day of Fishing, Mt. View Lake,NY
Order# ADK-428
A day long anticipated and inevitably cold, brought avid fisherman to the small
lakes and rivers of the Northern Adirondacks. This day was typical, but hopefully, worth
the effort. |
|
"Ephraim", Veteran, Civil War
Order# ADK-433
One of the last Civil War veterans in the area, Ephraim Bova, lived for many years
in his log cabin near lake Titus, N.Y. Visiting him in the 1920's, memory took him back to
the past, Civil War days when returning soldiers gratefully received pensions, due to the
efforts of one crippled old ex-army doctor, Civil War surgeon/major Dr. Calvin Skinner, my
great grandfather, whose ready pen and influence brought pensions due from Washington. |
|
Ephraim's Cabin
Order# ADK-437
A lonely cabin on a windswept hill, mute testimony of a long gone pioneer era in
the Adirondack foothills. As in many scenes of yore, this commonplace cabin, with its gray
aged rough lumber and slack-lime grouting, is now a great rarity. Perhaps that is because
it lacked modern man-made varnishes that, while preserving, lost so much of its original
rustic charm. |

Maxwell
Order# TRV-416
Warning sign's along deep-rutted highways warned "Sound Klaxon", bringing
a responsive "Honk Honk" from the new (1910) Maxwell as Pappa cautiously steered
along the narrow roads. Mamma, for whom the shiny black horseless carriage had been bought
to provide "fresh moving air" for her frail health at the doctor's advice, was
rigidly ensconced beside him, with two little girls, (my sister and me), providing
constant sneezing accompaniment in the back seat. Picture shows tight-woven veils around
little necks to prevent invasion of dust and pollen.
