MELVILLE       STATION
PINELAWN     STATION

SEYFRIED INFORMS US THAT A SMALL FRAME PASSENGER STATION OPENED
IN 1898 LOCATED NORTH OF THE RAILROAD AND WEST OF WELWOOD AVENUE -
PINELAWN ROAD.   THAT IS AN EASTBOUND FLAG STOP "FLAG" ON THE PLATFORM.
A   PASSENGER WOULD RAISE THE BLADE TO INFORM AN APPROACHING TRAIN.

MELVILLE STATION APPEARS ON THIS 1897 MAP.

MELVILLE STATION APPEARS IN THE JUNE AND SEPTEMBER 1897 EMPLOYE TIME TABLES.
THIS IS E.T.T. NUMBER THREE OF JUNE 1897

DAVE KELLER'S JUNE 1897 PUBLIC TIMETABLE ALSO SHOWS MELVILLE.

STATEMENT OF EARNINGS AND WEIGHT OF EXPRESS CARRIED

THE JUNE 1898 PUBLIC TIMETABLE SHOWS "PINELAWN (MELVILLE)"

ON AUGUST 30,  1904 THIS STONE EDIFACE WAS OPENED TO SERVE AS
CEMETERY OFFICE,  CHAPEL,  AND LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD TICKET OFFICE.

THE RAILROAD DID NOT USE THE NEW OFFICE,   REMAINING IN THE 1898 BUILDING.

THE BAGGAGE CART WAS MOST LIKELY USED TO TRANSFER COFFINS FROM TRAIN TO CEMETERY BUILDING.

IN 1915 THIS BUILDING REPLACED THE 1898 STRUCTURE IN THE SAME LOCATION.

ABOUT 1925 THE NEW STATION BUILDING WAS MOVED TO A SITE
SOUTH OF THE TRACKS AND EAST OF WELWOOD AVENUE - PINELAWN ROAD.

IN APRIL, 1928 THE CEMETERY BUILDING BURNED.

IN 1936 PINELAWN BECAME A NATIONAL CEMETERY

BILL RUGEN PHOTOGRAPHED THE REMAINS MAY 30 1960.

DICK MAKSE OFFERS THESE IMAGES AND SOME INFORMATION:
I am also including, for your enjoyment, an ancient Anscochrome shot in 1962 with my father's Argus C-3.   In the days when we still honored Presidents by name, we also celebrated Memorial Day.   Back in 1962 and many years before and after, the LIRR dispatched an extra ticket agent from Farmingdale Station to pick up once-a-year ticket stock and dater die reading "Pinelawn" to handle the annual "rush hour" at Pinelawn's frame depot.   #4246 left Jamaica at 11:00 AM arriving Pinelawn at 11:36.   #4247 (pictured) returned at 1:45 PM with 300 widows and family members.   Veteran engineer Rudy Storch at the left, nearing retirement, well knew the importance of his once-a-year train.   This was one of those special trains that the LIRR also found a space for in its timetable--runs May 30 only.
I still have the ticket I bought back then.
