THE NEW YORK AND MANHATTAN BEACH RAILWAY
|
EVERY YEAR AUTUMN AND WINTER STORMS DID SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE BEACH AND TO THE MARINE RAILWAY.
A FEBRUARY 16, 1885 STORM DAMAGED THE EASTERN MARINE
RAILWAY SO SEVERELY THAT IT WAS NEVER REBUILT EAST OF THE ORIENTAL HOTEL. |
THE DUPLEX CAR "ORIENTAL" RECEIVED ITS POWER FROM A THIRD RAIL WHICH WAS LOCATED BETWEEN THE RUNNING RAILS AND WAS ENERGIZED SECTION BY SECTION ONLY WHEN THE CAR WAS PRESENT. IT WAS TESTED FOR A SHORT PERIOD IN 1899, WAS EVENTUALLY FITTED WITH TROLLEY POLES, AND WAS PHOTOGRAPHED BACK AT MANHATTAN BEACH IN 1905.
|
THE STORM OF NOVEMBER 25, 1888 RESULTED IN THE RAILWAY'S RELOCATION FURTHER NORTH |
STEAM WAS USED UNTIL THE END OF THE 1905 SEASON. A NEW TROLLEY CAR WITH AN ELECTRIFIED OPEN STEAM CAR AS A SPARE PROVIDED SERVICE FROM 1906 UNTIL THE END OF THE 1913 SEASON.
|
FROM 1906 UNTIL 1913
TROLLEY CARS PROVIDED SERVICE ON THE MARINE RAILWAY. ON AUGUST 7, 1913 TWO LEASED BATTERY CARS BEGAN RUNNING ON ORIENTAL BOULEVARD AND TO THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD'S SHEEPSHEAD BAY STATION WHERE PASSENGERS COULD TRANSFER TO THE BRIGHTON LINE. |
