THE BROOKLYN & JAMAICA RAIL ROAD THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD and ATLANTIC AVENUE - PART FIVE |
IN 1899 AN ELEVATED STRUCTURE WAS BUILT TO CONNECT THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD WITH THE BROOKLYN UNION ELEVATED RAILROAD COMPANY'S FIFTH AVENUE EL. FOR FIVE YEARS L.I.R.R. RAPID TRANSIT TRAINS RAN TO BROOKLYN BRIDGE WHERE THEY TURNED ON A LOOP AND RETURNED TO JAMAICA, FAR ROCKAWAY AND ROCKAWAY JUNCTION. FOR FASTER LOADING AND UNLOADING AT BROOKLYN BRIDGE THE RAILROAD IN 1898 AND 1899 PURCHASED 55 (?) CENTER DOOR TRAILERS. THE CENTER DOORS WERE OPENED BY AN EMPLOYE ON THE STATION PLATFORM AND WERE USED ONLY AT THE BRIDGE.
|
WHEN BROOKLYN BRIDGE SERVICE BEGAN - MAY 24, 1899 - THE BRIDGE TRAINS RAN ONLY TO JAMAICA AND TO VALLEY STREAM VIA THE TRESTLE AND FAR ROCKAWAY. THE ROCKAWAY JUNCTION RAPID TRANSITS TERMINATED AT EAST NEW YORK, MANHATTAN BEACH CROSSING. PASSENGERS FOR LOCAL STATIONS COULD GET A TRAIN FROM BROOKLYN OR A MANHATTAN BEACH DIVISION TRAIN FROM LONG ISLAND CITY AND CHANGE AT EAST NEW YORK. PASSENGERS FOR NEW YORK AVENUE, CANAL STREET AND ROCKAWAY JUNCTION WOULD CHANGE AT JAMAICA. |
