THE   LONG   ISLAND   RAIL   ROAD   COMPANY
HUNTERS   POINT   -   LONG   ISLAND   CITY       PART   FOUR
DB  CABIN,  DUTCH  KILLS  DRAWBRIDGE  and  WHEELSPUR  YARD

THIS 1916 PLAN SHOWS THE LAYOUT AFTER TOWER TWO
WAS REPLACED BY DB CABIN IN OCTOBER 1915.

THE TRACK ARRANGEMENT AT DB CABIN WAS MODIFIED IN DECEMBER 1923 WHEN
A GAUNTLET TRACK WAS PRODUCED FROM THE TWO MAIN TRACKS   -   PERHAPS
TO PREVENT TWO NEW G5s's FROM OCCUPYING THE BRIDGE AT THE SAME TIME.

BY 1944 SMASHBOARD SIGNALS HAD BEEN INSTALLED.
AT DB CABIN THEY WERE CONTROLLED BY LEVER NUMBER FOUR.

THIS IS A SMASHBOARD SIGNAL.

WHEN THE BLADE IS HORIZONTAL THE INDICATION IS "STOP".

IN THIS PHOTO THE WESTBOUND SMASHBOARD FOR CABIN M IS
AT PROCEED,   THE WESTBOUND SMASHBOARD FOR DB IS AT STOP.

A TRAIN PASSING THE STOP SIGNAL BREAKS THE BLADE -
EVIDENCE IN THE INVESTIGATION FOLLOWING A TRAIN PLUNGING INTO THE WATER.
OR MERELY PLUNGING OFF THE END OF THE TRACK.

BOB   EMERY   PHOTOGRAPHED   DB   CABIN

ABOUT 1950 POSITION LIGHT SIGNALS REPLACED THE SEMAPHORES
PROTECTING THE DRAWBRIDGE.   ANOTHER BOB EMERY PHOTOGRAPH.

ART RECALLS BEING TOLD THAT WHEELSPUR YARD WAS SELDOM USED OR NOT USED AT ALL AFTER ABOUT 1930 BUT WAS PLACED BACK IN SERVICE FOR THE 1939 - 1940 WORLD'S FAIR.   UNTIL ABOUT 1958 IT WAS STILL USED TO STORE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD TRAINS AND P.R.R. STEAM LOCOMOTIVES SUPPLIED STEAM FOR HEAT.
THESE ARE COAL BURNING H9S CONSOLIDATIONS.

THANKS   TO   DAVE   KELLER   FOR   THIS   NICE   SHOT

BY 1950 THERE WERE THREE OIL BURNING L1s's.   THIS IS OCTOBER 16, 1955.

IN 1959 THE YARD HAD BEEN TORN UP AND THE MAIN TRACKS
WERE BEING MOVED SOUTH PENDING THE SALE OF THE PROPERTY.

THIS   IS   THE   1893   DRAWBRIDGE.
